PAPER INDUSTRY

Another area of industry where zeolites can be used is the paper manufacturing industry. Application of zeolites in paper making was developed in Japan. [BOOK] There are two different zeolite types are employed in this application and they have the trade names of "Hiz" and "SGW".

"SGW" clinoptilolites are produced by simple dry grinding of natural ore deposit with further dispersion in fractions by aeration. Quality of the product depends on the properties of the original clinoptilolite deposit. In "Hiz" clinoptilolites, clinoptilolite ore is finely ground (wet grinding) and classified by cycloning into a 10-micrometer-size product. The product is granulated after drying prior to sale. The properties of "Hiz" and "SGW" are shown below

When zeolite (clinoptilotite) is used in paper making, more porous paper is produced. This kind of paper has lower density compared to conventional paper; is less smooth but more opaque. Paper brightness which depends on the filler is almost same for both conventional and zeolite added paper. As the surface of zeolite added paper is less smooth (in micron size), it is less susceptible to ink blotting than those filled with clay

Hayakawa and Kobayashi (1973) patented a lightweight paper made from a mixture of 7% pulp, 25% chemically ground pulp, 28% bleached raft, 1% sizing, 1% aluminium suifate, and 28% zeolite powder
